Why am I doing this? There are a couple of reasons. First, college has remained an unfinished chapter in my life. Second, after losing my job in April I found that my lack of a degree was a major stumbling block in my career search.
Griffin went through some difficult restructuring and I found myself out of a job. I spent the spring and summer traveling around the country interviewing and trying to get a sense for where I wanted to end up. Some things became apparent pretty quickly. For starters, most of the design jobs required skills that I haven’t used in quite some time. Meanwhile, the management positions were looking for that degree I don’t have.
Through the support (and convincing) of my family, on August 1st I decided to re-enroll as a full-time student and finish my degree. AU classes started August 18 but Auburn elementary schools started August 11. That gave us 10 days to find a place to live and move 350 miles so that our 7 year old could start second grade. Now that all of that is out of the way we’re getting settled into a routine.
In order to make up for lost time and finish within my 12 month goal I have had to enroll in 5 Industrial Design classes this fall. It’s a full load but so far I am managing pretty well. Of course I’m only on my 3rd week of class. I trust things will get more interesting as the semester wears on.
I’ve had enough people asking me what it is like being back in school after all these years so I figured I’d use this blog to share my thoughts and experiences. This is my first attempt at blogging so please bear with me as I figure all this out.
Thanks for stopping by!
